Best eSIM for Visitors to Australia (2026) — Which Network to Pick

Australia is a big country. That matters more for mobile coverage here than almost anywhere else you’ll travel — pick the wrong provider and you can lose signal for hours at a time. There are three major networks, each with its own strengths and weaknesses, and everything else (including Airalo) runs on top of one of them.

I live here and have tried all three providers. Currently on Woolworths Mobile — Telstra’s network underneath — so I’m sharing my lived experience.

💡 Short answer Get Airalo, on Optus, sorted before you fly. Good enough for every capital city, the coast, and most regional towns. The only real exception is deep Outback driving — more on that below.

Can Tourists Buy a Local SIM in Australia?

Yes — and most guides get this wrong by implying otherwise. Telstra, Boost, and the supermarket brands (Woolworths, ALDI, Coles) will all sell you a SIM with just a passport. Some want an Australian address (your hotel is fine), a couple want to see your visa. It’s not a locals-only thing.

The catch is timing, not eligibility: you need to already be in the country, in a queue, after a long flight, before any of it works. An eSIM you install before you leave home skips that entirely.

When a Telstra SIM Is the Better Choice

⚠️ Reality check Two separate reasons you might want Telstra instead. First, if you’re staying long-term rather than a short holiday, a local plan works out cheaper over time than a travel eSIM. Second, if your route includes remote driving — Uluru, the Nullarbor, the Kimberley, the NT interior — Telstra (or Boost, same network, cheaper) gives you the best odds of a signal. It won’t be full coverage. Even Telstra has real gaps in the deep interior, and you will lose signal for stretches regardless of which network you’re on. You’ll buy it in person or via an app after you land, and it costs more than a travel eSIM. None of the travel eSIMs, Airalo included, run on Telstra.

Nomad vs Holafly: The Vodafone eSIM Option

Both run on Vodafone, which used to trail badly outside cities. That gap has mostly closed — Vodafone struck a network-sharing deal with Optus in early 2026 that improved its coverage footprint. I stick with Airalo because I’ve already tested it in a dozen other countries including Australia.

Do I need an Australian SIM to use my bank’s app or receive verification codes?
No — an eSIM only replaces your data, not your phone number. Calls, SMS, and anything tied to your home number keep working exactly as they do at home, roaming charges from your own provider aside.
Can I buy an Australian SIM before I arrive?
A few providers offer online pre-order with pickup at the airport, but most require you to be in the country to activate. An eSIM installs before you fly, which is the main reason to use one instead.
Is Optus coverage good enough for a normal holiday?
