Sydney Domestic Airport By Foot… A Step-By-Step Guide
Updated May 2026
There are lots of ways to get to Sydney Domestic Airport. But for me, access by train has always been the most convenient. I have been stuck in traffic jams around the airport too many times watching my lounge time disappear and the taxi meter click over.
What has always irked me is the train station Airport access fee, at $17.92 per person, it’s enough to make you ask if there other options?
My friend Alan, a weekly user of Sydney Airport, once confided he sometimes walks from Mascot station to the airport saving the access fee while getting some incidental exercise.
📍 Updated May 2026 — we walked this route again this week
- The construction nightmare on O’Riordan Street is finished. The route that had us backtracking and navigating roadworks in 2019 is now clean and straightforward. The O’Riordan Street footpath closure tip below no longer applies — the path is fully open.
- More hotels have appeared along the route since we first walked it. The precinct between Mascot station and the terminal is more built up and easier to navigate than it was.
- The walk is getting popular. We passed families, backpackers and airport workers — the same mix as in 2019. — they all got the nod of champions.
- There’s now a bus option too — the 420 and 350 from Mascot if you’d rather not walk. Details below.
- New Strava route below — updated 2026 recording.

How to walk from Mascot Station to Sydney Domestic Airport Station Station

So, I decided to test it out and this is what I found:
According to Google maps, it’s a 22-minute walk from Mascot railway station to Terminal 2, which is the Virgin Terminal. The first thing I noticed is that there was a lot of construction along the way. If you don’t pick the right side of the road you could be backtracking or jaywalking across some pretty busy roads.
2026 update: The construction along O’Riordan Street that caused so much grief in 2019 is now completely finished. The footpath is fully open and the route is straightforward. Winston would have had an easier time.
It’s best to stick on the station side of the Bourke Street heading south, cross over Coward Street and then cross Bourke at the next opportunity. You will shortly pass Qantas head office as you walk down Bourke Street. Look out for the jet engine on display in the window.
You will then hit O’Riordan Street, but don’t cross it yet. Walk towards the Pullman and then Ibis hotels until you meet Qantas Drive. You can see all the construction across the road that was blocking our access. Before crossing Qantas Drive, first cross O’Riordan Street.

From there you are entering the Airport precinct, so just follow the signs until you reach the Virgin Terminal 2 entrance. If you want to go to Qantas Terminal, just follow the signs to the train station, which has an underground walkway linking the terminals.

Tip: if you are coming from the Domestic Airport to Mascot, take care to cross at O’Riordan Street as the footpath was closed when we tried.

You won’t be alone doing the walk. We saw families, backpackers and even Qantas staff pulling their bags to and from the Airport.
Find my walk on Strava
I captured the walk on Strava and reckon you need 26 minutes to do the walk comfortably. However, if you need to backtrack because of roadworks, then add a further 5 minutes. Google maps does not consider the long wait time to cross the road.
Is there a bus option from Mascot to the Domestic Airport?
Yes — and it’s worth knowing about, particularly if you’re travelling with more luggage than you’d want to walk with.
The 350 bus runs directly from Mascot station to the domestic terminal in 7 minutes. The 420 bus also serves the domestic terminal from Mascot and continues on to the international terminal — useful if you need to connect between the two.
Both buses accept Opal card tap-on/tap-off and charge a standard fare with no airport access surcharge. The saving vs the train is the same as walking — you avoid the $17.92 airport station access fee.
Important: tap off when you exit. We watched multiple passengers skip this on our most recent trip — without a tap-off you’ll be charged the maximum fare for the route.
The bus stops outside the Qantas Terminal (T3). T2 (Virgin Australia) is connected via an underground walkway inside — follow the signs, allow about 5 minutes.

Which hotels are near Sydney Domestic Airport?
One option is to stay in a hotel near the airport the night before you travel. There are two choices when staying near Sydney Domestic Airport. You can choose to stay closer to Mascot train station eg Holiday Inn Sydney Airport, Pullman Sydney Airport or the Ibis Sydney Airport. The advantage they have is easy access to the city via Mascot train station. Plus some better food options.
The other alternative is to be closer to the Airport eg The Stamford, the Ibis Budget Sydney Airport or the Mantra. They are all an easy flat walk to the terminal and have a McDonalds very close.
Getting to the International Terminal from Mascot
One of the most common questions we get is whether you can walk — or catch the bus — from Mascot all the way to the international terminal.
The bus: yes. The 420 from Mascot goes to the international terminal in 17 minutes. Standard Opal fare, no airport access surcharge. The bus stop at international is actually closer to the departures entrance than the train station. Full details in our Sydney Airport bus guide →
Walking: not recommended. The distance between the domestic and international terminals is too far and the route is unattractive. From Mascot to international on foot would take well over an hour. Catch the 420 bus.
Summary
If you have time on your hands, you have packed lightly and it’s a sunny day, why not get off at Mascot and walk. The money you save can be used to pay for your first drink at your destination, and it will be a most satisfactory one!

Frequently asked questions

Head south on Bourke Street from Mascot station, staying on the station side of the road. Cross Coward Street, then cross Bourke at the next opportunity heading toward O’Riordan Street. Pass the Pullman and Ibis hotels, cross O’Riordan Street, then follow the airport signs to your terminal. The full step-by-step directions are above. Allow 21 minutes at a comfortable pace.

1.6km. Google Maps shows a similar distance but may route you differently. The walk takes around 21 minutes on the direct route via O’Riordan Street.
How much do I save by walking from Mascot instead of taking the train?

Yes — the path is footpath and road crossing the whole way, with no significant hills. A carry-on roller bag is manageable. The Pullman Sydney Airport and Ibis Sydney Airport sit right on the walk route along O’Riordan Street — you’ll pass them on the way. The Holiday Inn Sydney Airport is near Mascot station if you want easy city train access the night before. The Stamford and Mantra are closer to the terminal itself for an early morning flight.
What about Winston?
Winston the mini groodle was our mascot on the original 2019 walk. He found the construction on O’Riordan Street just as confusing as we did. We’re pleased to report the path is now clear and Winston would have a much easier time of it today.

Seems worth a try – on a fine day. You make look so easy!
Thanks David.. watch out to our Tempe to International Airport post that is coming soon
