Review: Cathay Dragon Business Class A320

After a night at the Four Points by Sheraton, it was time to begin the premium part of the trip with review of the Business Class flight on Cathay Dragon to Hong Kong.

It was a quick Grab ride to Danang International Airport this morning with minimal traffic and check in was handled efficiently. With boarding passes for both the Danang to Hong Kong and Hong Kong to New York flights in hand, it was off to immigration.

There was a long line at immigration which took about 15 minutes to clear, and then through security screening before making it to the CIP Orchid Lounge (which I reviewed in October 2019) for breakfast. It’s worth noting that the CIP Orchid Lounge is part of the Priority Pass network for paid access.

Boarding was from Gate 6, which is conveniently opposite the CIP Orchid lounge.

During the boarding process the cabin crew offered pre departure beverages to Business Class passengers so I went with a refreshing smoothie.

Boarding was uneventful and we were soon rolling down the runway bound for Hong Kong.

Cathay Dragon crew have been friendly and efficient on my two previous flights, and the team on this flight were very good too. The Inflight Service Manager, distinct in their black uniform, welcomed each passenger on board and distribute breakfast menus.

There were two hot choices for breakfast with a Western option of Spanish omelette or an Asian option of BBQ pork with egg noodles.

I selected the BBQ pork with stir fried egg noodles, which was served with fresh fruit and yoghurt. The noodles were reasonably tasty and filling, though I preferred the seafood noodles in Economy Class which I had the day before.

Meals in Business Class are served on a tray, albeit one covered with a nice table cloth and with proper china.

Drink orders were taken and I opted for a mug of jasmine tea, which was served promptly. By the time I had enjoyed the tea, the Captain came on the PA to advise we were 30 minutes to landing.

The approach to Hong Kong wasn’t nearly as scenic as October but it was smooth and we were soon docked at the 500-series gates again for the bus ride to the main terminal.

Fortunately, a skybridge is being built to connect the main terminal to these 500-series gates so by the end of 2020 the bus ride will no longer be needed.

What is the difference between Business Class and Economy Class?

Having flown Cathay Dragon Economy Class and Business Class on consecutive days, the main difference on board is the seats in 2-2 configuration rather than 3-3 and greater recline.

Both cabins get hot meals even on short sectors like Hong Kong to Danang, which are under two hours, and friendly service.

Cathay Dragon Business Class Review Summary

The short hop from Danang to Hong Kong in Business Class was smooth and pleasant. Our cabin crew were efficient and friendly, delivering polished service on this short flight.

Intra-Asia Business Class is a pleasure compared to Euro Business, which is an Economy Class seat with the middle seat blocked, and North American First Class, which is a comparable seat with generally poor food and service.
