Velocity Family Pooling vs. Points Transfers: 2026 Guide
Planning a family ski trip but your Velocity points are spread across multiple accounts? For Australian frequent flyers, Velocity Family Pooling is one of two ways to combine points — the other being Family Points Transfers. Most people don’t realise they are entirely different tools with different purposes, different rules, and different outcomes.
Getting the distinction right matters more than ever following Velocity’s October 2025 status rule changes, which affect how pooled Status Credits count toward qualification. This 2026 guide breaks down how each feature works, how to set them up, and the key things to know before you start — including a significant rule change that catches many families out.
Feature 1: What is Velocity Family Pooling?
Family Pooling is a long-term, automatic arrangement. Once set up, all future Points and Status Credits earned by contributing family members are swept directly into one beneficiary’s account. Any points already sitting in accounts are not moved — only new earnings from that point forward. See the full details on the official Velocity family benefits page.
A Family Pool can have up to 6 members total (including the beneficiary), all living at the same address. Importantly, no more than 2 adults over 18 can be in a pool — if a child turns 18 while in the pool, they are automatically removed as a third adult. Up to 4 children under 18 can participate.
Best for: Channelling a family’s combined future earnings to fast-track one person’s points and status balance — for example, getting a partner to Gold so the whole family benefits from lounge access and priority boarding when travelling together.
Feature 2: What are Velocity Family Points Transfers?
Family Points Transfers are a one-off, manual arrangement. You transfer a portion of your existing points balance directly to an eligible family member. Unlike Pooling, the family member does not need to live at the same address — they just need to be an eligible relative. You can only transfer points, not Status Credits.
Limits apply: a minimum of 5,000 points and a maximum of 125,000 points per transfer, up to four transfers per membership year.
Best for: A quick top-up when a family member is short for a specific redemption. If your son needs 8,000 more points for a reward flight, a Family Transfer gets it done immediately.
How to Set Up Pooling and Transfers
Both features are managed on the Velocity website — not in the mobile app. Here’s how each works.
Family Pooling and Family Points Transfer are both found under My Profile in your Velocity account.
Setting Up Family Pooling — initiated by the contributor
The pool must be set up by the person who wants to give their points (the contributor), not the person receiving them. The beneficiary cannot initiate it.
- The contributor logs into their own Velocity account at velocityfrequentflyer.com.
- Navigate to My Profile and click Family Pooling.
- Enter the beneficiary’s name and Velocity number, and choose whether to pool Points only or Points and Status Credits.
- Points and Status Credits will begin transferring from 12:01am the following day — anything earned on the setup day itself is not included.
Family Pooling must be set up by the contributor, not the beneficiary. The arrangement can be started or stopped at any time.
Making a Family Points Transfer — initiated by the sender
As noted above, the online transfer service is currently offline. To transfer points, call 13 18 75 and fees are being waived. When the online service returns, the process is:
- The person sending the points logs into their Velocity account.
- Navigate to My Profile then Family Points Transfer.
- Enter the recipient’s details, confirm the relationship, and choose the amount to transfer.
- Transfers occur immediately and cannot be reversed — check all details carefully before confirming.
The Velocity app lets the beneficiary track incoming pooled points and status credits in real time.

The Status Pooling Strategy — Updated for 2026
The traditional use case for Family Pooling was to pool everyone’s Status Credits into one account to fast-track that person to Gold or Platinum, then enjoy the lounge access and other perks as a family when travelling together.
That strategy still works — but it’s more complicated since October 2025. Velocity now requires a minimum proportion of Status Credits to be earned personally on eligible Virgin Australia flights. Pooled Status Credits from family members count toward the total, but cannot make up the majority. If your family mostly travels together on the same flights, pooling Status Credits may add limited additional benefit since you’re all earning from the same flights anyway.
The strategy still makes clear sense when contributors earn Status Credits independently — for example, a partner who flies frequently for work contributing their credits to the family member who travels less.
Keep Track of Your Family’s Points
The hardest part of a family points strategy — whether you’re using Velocity Pooling, Velocity Transfers, or Qantas Family Transfers — is knowing what everyone actually has across programs. It’s easy to make the wrong transfer decision when you can’t see the full picture.
Our free Points Consolidator lets you enter balances across Qantas, Velocity and Amex Membership Rewards in one view. No login, no sign-up — it runs entirely on your device. And if you’re planning the family trip that all these points are building toward, our Airport Lounge Finder shows which lounges your status and cards unlock at 34 airports worldwide.
If you’re heading overseas, an Airalo eSIM is worth adding to the trip plan — data in 200+ countries without the roaming bill. New users get 15% off via our link. (Small referral our way if you use our link — doesn’t change your price.)

Frequently Asked Questions
Family Pooling is an automatic ongoing arrangement — all future points and status credits earned by contributing members are swept into the beneficiary’s account. All members must live at the same address. Family Points Transfer is a one-off manual transfer of existing points to any eligible family member regardless of where they live. Pooling moves status credits; transfers do not.
It depends on your family’s travel patterns. It works best when contributors earn points and status credits independently — for example, a partner who flies frequently for work. Since October 2025, status qualification now requires a minimum proportion of credits earned personally on Virgin Australia flights, so pooling alone can no longer achieve status. For points accumulation without the status angle, it remains a useful automatic consolidation tool.
The contributor sets up the pool from their own account under My Profile → Family Pooling. From 12:01am the following day, all points and status credits they earn are automatically transferred to the beneficiary. Existing balances are not moved. The arrangement can be stopped at any time, but pooled amounts already transferred cannot be reversed.
Yes — via Family Points Transfer. As of mid-2026 the online transfer service is temporarily offline, so you need to call the Velocity Membership Contact Centre on 13 18 75. Fees are being waived during this period. Limits are 5,000 to 125,000 points per transfer, up to four times per membership year.
Yes. Velocity Points expire 24 months after the last date you earned, redeemed or transferred points. Keeping your account active — through flying, partner spending, or transfers — resets the clock. Family Pooling counts as ongoing activity for the beneficiary as long as contributors are actively earning.
No. Velocity Points cannot be transferred directly to Qantas Frequent Flyer or Flybuys. They are separate programs. You can transfer points from some partners into Velocity, but not the other way around. If your family also uses Qantas, see our guide to Qantas Family Transfer — the rules are quite different.
It depends on how you redeem them. Short domestic economy reward seats require relatively few points. For longer routes or business class, the same balance can represent significantly more value. Velocity also offers a Points + Pay option where every 2,500 points reduces your fare by $15 — useful for partial redemptions. Check current reward seat availability and pricing on the Velocity website before committing, as redemption rates change periodically.
Yes — a maximum of 2 adults over 18 can be in a pool, plus up to 4 children under 18 (6 members total including the beneficiary). If a child in the pool turns 18, they are automatically removed as they would become a third adult. Plan your pool membership with this in mind if you have teenagers approaching 18.
They work quite differently. Velocity Family Pooling is automatic and ongoing, moves both points and status credits, but requires everyone to live at the same address. Qantas Family Transfer is a manual one-off transfer of existing points only, with no address requirement and no annual cap on total transfers. See our full Qantas Family Transfer guide for a side-by-side breakdown.
It can help, but since October 2025 it can no longer do it alone. Velocity now requires a minimum proportion of Status Credits to be earned personally on eligible Virgin Australia flights. Pooled Status Credits from family members count toward your total but cannot make up the majority required for status qualification. If your family mostly flies together on the same routes, the pooling benefit for status is limited.
