Ambassador Transit Lounge Review: Changi T3 (SIN) — Worth It?

I have been to nearly every lounge in Singapore. Unfortunately my favourites are the ones that you can’t buy entry to (think Qantas First). The Ambassador Transit Lounge you can buy entrance to, and it sits in one of those places that is functional more than fantastic.

We landed in Terminal 2 at Changi with an 11-hour layover on the way home from Siem Reap. The plan: three hours in the lounge, six in the transit hotel, and two hours of faffing around getting off one plane and onto the next. We could have taken a free trip into Singapore, but we’ve done that too many times. We were ready to come home.

The short version

A compact, busy pay-per-use lounge in the T3 transit area with a strict 3-hour limit. The food is standard buffet fare, you get up to four drinks, and the surprise is free Magnolia ice cream. Lazy people pay more: S$44 with LoungePair, free with Priority Pass and similar programs, or S$55 at the desk (S$68 with a shower).

Getting there

We landed in Terminal 2 and caught the free Skytrain to Terminal 3. That was a highlight: you pass through Jewel and see the indoor waterfall from up high.

In T3, follow the overhead signs for Transit Hotel / Pay-per-use Lounge, Butterfly Garden or Free Movie. Take the escalator up to Level 3. The lounge is on the mezzanine, next to the Movie Theatre and the Butterfly Garden.

Getting in

Check-in was straightforward. I had downloaded the complimentary LoungePair passes I was gifted, and staff scanned them and our boarding passes to let us both in. Each person needs their own pass.

The 3-hour limit is strict, and they reminded us of it. You wear a sticker on your shirt with your exit time written on it. We arrived at about 2:30pm, so mine said 17:30.

The sign at the door lists Priority Pass, LoungeKey, Diners Club, Lounge Pass, DreamFolks, DragonPass, MileOnAir and NUSS. DragonPass means a CommBank or Bankwest Mastercard should also get you in.

The food

The usual selection: baked goods, breakfast cereal and a row of hot dishes in bain-maries. There’s also a live noodle station (11:30am to 10pm), which was making laksa while we were there.

The surprise was a freezer full of Magnolia ice cream tubs in chocolate, strawberry and vanilla. For research purposes, I had all three. The portions are modest, so I decanted them into a bowl.

Research required all three.

The drinks

Eligible guests get up to four drinks; show your sticker at the bar. Four is a reasonable number over three hours, and in practice nobody seemed to be counting. Extra drinks are S$6 each. Alcohol is served from 6am to midnight.

The house pour is Grant’s Scotch, Wembley or Barton gin, Stalinskaya vodka, Bacardi rum, Tiger beer, and Somerton Shiraz and Chardonnay from South Eastern Australia. Soft drinks come from a Coke fountain, and there’s a coffee machine.

Seating, butterflies and showers

The lounge is compact and busy, with a large turnover. We were in a pod of six seats with plenty of power points.

We snagged a seat next to the butterfly enclosure. It was interesting to watch, and some of the butterflies came quite close.

The Wi-Fi works, but it’s slow: 11 Mb/s down and 4.9 Mb/s up. Fine for email, not for big downloads.

Our LoungePair passes included a shower. Walk-in guests pay S$68 for 3 hours with a shower, or S$20 for a shower on its own (30 minutes). We brought flip-flops to wear in the shower. I would not go in barefoot.

Nap rooms are open-plan single beds with privacy curtains and shared bathrooms, at S$120 for a minimum of 6 hours.

Is it worth it?

Yes, if it’s free on your card or you have a LoungePair pass. It’s a solid place to eat, charge up and have a drink in T3 transit, with the butterflies as a bonus. Use the whole drinks allowance and eat well, and you could come out ahead.

It’s busy and the 3-hour limit is enforced, so it’s not the spot for a long layover. Don’t pay S$55 to S$68 at the desk: a LoungePair pass is S$44, shower included. And don’t forget Changi has plenty of cheaper, better food outside the lounge.
