Review: Fairfield Inn Manhattan Chinatown (Downtown East)

The Fairfield Inn Manhattan Downtown East is a three star hotel located on Henry Street in the Chinatown district of Manhattan.

With the 1 AUD = 0.67 USD, it was important to get the best deal possible for a clean and comfortable hotel room. I had a ‘pay at the hotel’ booking at The Kitano in Midtown for about A$360 per night but found a Best Rate Guarantee opportunity for the Fairfield Inn in August. The successful BRG claim brought the nightly rate to A$225 per night at at time when other three star hotels were A$300+ per night.

Getting From JFK Airport To Fairfield Inn Manhattan Downtown East

From JFK Airport I took a combination of the JFK AirTrain (US$5, though increased to US$7.75 from November 3 2019), Long Island Rail Road (US$4.50 on weekends) and then the subway (US$2.75) to get to the hotel in about an hour and for a total of US$12.25.

Check in was processed quickly by a friendly front desk clerk, who also explained breakfast was included for all guests and served on the mezzanine. With my key in hand, it was time to head up to the room.

Room 416 was near the end of the corridor on Level 4 and was what you would expect of a standard room at a Hampton Inn, which is Hilton’s equivalent brand that I have previously stayed with in Alaska.

Being my first stay at a Fairfield Inn, a choice driven by a combination of price and the Marriott Platinum Elite Challenge, I was very happy with the quality of the room.

There was a comfortable king size bed, work desk and plenty of space in the room, with a bar fridge and coffee machine provided.

The bathroom was clean and generously sized with plenty of bench space and a shower over bath. Water pressure was very good and there was consistent hot water, which made for an excellent shower.

Fairfield Inn Manhattan Downtown East Breakfast

Breakfast is included for all guests and featured a good spread of cereals, fruit, yoghurt, toast plus coffee, tea and juice. The most popular item was a make your own waffles station, which was a fun treat for breakfast accompanied by maple syrup and butter!

I only had the one sit down breakfast here but the waffles, fruit and coffee were a nice way to start off the day. It was convenient that a coffee to go station was provided so I would often get a cup of coffee and some whole fruit (oranges and apples were provided) for later in the day.

Fairfield Inn Manhattan Downtown East Location

The hotel is a three minute walk to East Broadway, a subway station on the F Train, connecting you to DUMBO in Brooklyn in one stop (York Street) and directly to key spots like the Rockefeller Centre in Midtown Manhattan.

It was great to take the subway to York Street and then have dinner in DUMBO before walking across the Brooklyn Bridge to Manhattan.

The Financial District with Wall Street and the 9/11 Memorial are also within walking distance, as is Battery Park for the ferry to Liberty Island and Ellis Island.

Fairfield Inn Manhattan Chinatown Summary

The Fairfield Inn Manhattan Downtown East scores well on the price to value ratio. It’s a comfortable three star hotel with Marriott standards and a great base from which to explore New York.
