Review: Qantas Business Class 787 Dreamliner

Qantas operates two evening flights from Hong Kong to Sydney and I selected the earlier QF128 departure specifically to review the Business Class Suite on the 787 Dreamliner.

QF128 was departing from Gate 34 this evening so it was a short walk from The Pier Business Class Lounge.

Boarding was very well organised with Business and Premium Economy boarding from the left lane and Economy boarding from the right lane.

Qantas Airways 128
Hong Kong (HKG) – Sydney (SYD)
Monday, October 14
Depart: 7:30PM
Arrive: 7:55AM
Duration: 9hr25min
Aircraft: Boeing 787-900
Seat: 7A (Business Class)

With a single aerobridge in use, all passengers boarded from Door 2L where I turned left for Seat 7A. Business Class on the Dreamliner is split into a larger forward cabin and smaller rear cabin.

Window seats in odd numbered rows are true window seats and offer more privacy than the even numbered rows where the seat is right next to the aisle.

There is plenty of legroom and a sloped footrest for when the seat is in lounge mode. One of the great things about the Qantas Business Suite is you are able to have your seat semi-reclined for takeoff and landing.

The cabin crew were warm and efficient with pyjamas and champagne joining the amenity kit at the seat soon after settling in. Qantas is one of the few airlines that provide pyjamas in Business Class on overnight flight so bonus points there.

As we got underway, the Qantas safety video played and I waited for this classic/cringeworthy scene. Who operates an outdoor coffee cart in London?

We passed a few other Qantas tails taxiing out to the runway who would have been bound for Melbourne and Brisbane.

After a smooth takeoff the cabin crew sprung into action to prepare dinner and drinks, while passengers were asked to fill out their breakfast cards.

Qantas Business Class Food

Qantas has partnered with Neil Perry for their inflight and lounge menus for as long as I can remember. The dinner menu on this flight is below and had a number of options that I would have been happy with.

The roasted sweetcorn soup was perfect comfort food and I liked the corn kernels added as a topping. Bread roll was served warm, though the salad wasn’t particularly interesting.

A selection of wine was offered from the trolley and a bottle of Voyager Estate caught my eye as their 2013 Shiraz I had on a Sydney to Perth flight was excellent.

A main of wonton noodle soup was a lighter main and hit the spot. Fresh ginger gave the dish a nice warmth.

Given this was my second dinner, I skipped dessert and had a few squares of Valrhona chocolate with my wine. A nice way to round out the meal.

Qantas Business Class 787 Bed

Once the meal was complete I retrieved the mattress pad and duvet from the overhead locker and made the bed. It’s always a luxury to have a fully flat bed when flying and the Qantas Business Suite is a great bed with good width at the shoulders and enough room in the footwell to sleep sideways comfortably.

I had requested via the breakfast card not to be woken for a meal, so by the time I woke up and changed out of pyjamas we were nearing Sydney.

The extra large windows on the Dreamliner made for a scenic approach as we descended through the clouds.

There appeared to be some morning fog below as we got closer to Sydney.

And finally Sydney came into view with the distinctive parallel runways jutting out into Botany Bay.

Qantas 787 Business Class Review Summary

The Qantas Business Suite is a great way to travel and a noticeable improvement on the version on the A330. I was able to get a good night’s rest on the relatively short flight between Hong Kong and Sydney.

Service on this flight was friendly and efficient, with cabin crew taking the time to engage with passengers during the meal service.

After a fantastic fortnight away, it was great to be home.
