Review: Penang Plaza Premium Lounge

The Penang Airport Plaza Premium Lounge acts as the main lounge for Mastercard Airport Experiences,  Priority Pass, Silkair, China Southern, Qatar, China Airlines and Thai Smile.

We were travelling from Penang to Singapore on Jetstar. Our preference would have been the Cathay Pacific OneWorld lounge however it was not open for our flight. We were able to access the lounge via the Commonwealth Bank World Debit Mastercard.

Mastercard Airport Experiences

I had previously registered with Mastercard experiences and the site was able to tell me I had two passes available.  It also showed I could access the Plaza Premium Lounge. The lounge is located up an escalator once you pass through immigration and security.

Plaza Premium Lounge Check In

On arrival I presented my CommBank Card to the agent, and mentioned that was using Mastercard Airport Experiences  He then used a special terminal to see how many passes I had and then to processed the request. A seamless experience.

Opening hours is from 6:00am to 11:00pm.

Once I returned to Australia I had a charge on my debit card account for lounge access. I contacted CommBank and then Mastercard who assured me the transaction would be reversed, which it was..

The other choice would have been to pay for lounge access with Priority Pass or Mastercard. Both of these would have been expensive compared to the airside Starbucks in the area.

Food Service in the Penang Plaza Lounge

The highlight of the lounge was the food service. While they also had the usual bain marie service they also had a staff who would prepare Hainanese chicken rice or Laksa. On this visit Julie had both and I just had the Laksa, plus some sweet dumplings.

Being a muslim country beer was only available on request. There was no evidence of wine or spirits. Something i have never seen before is that you could also buy beer to take away. They had canned tea and coke available.

Hot drinks included tea, coffee and the Malaysian staple Milo.

Lounge Size

On our visit the lounge was only around 20% full. There were lots of seats with nearby power connections but no USB available.

Summary of Plaza Premium Lounge Penang

Only worth visiting if you have Priority Pass or Mastercard Experiences access and that you have no other access or you have a long stay at the terminal.  Otherwise you can camp in the Starbucks and use their wifi and comfortable chairs.
